The king parrot got rid of its curse and became a Sage and praised Siva for his mercy. The Lord told him to ask for a boon of his choice. The sage prayed to the Lord that he wanted to be at His merciful feet at all times in his life. The Lord mercifully granted his earnest prayers. The celestials showerd flowers and praised the Lord.Since the sage , as a parrot worshipped Siva in this place, this came to be known as 'Kizhivanam and Sugavanam ' and the deity as 'Kizhivananathar and Sugavaneswrar in the Kaliyuga. In memory of thisevent, there is a Urchava Idol of Suka Muni in this temple. On the prime deity Linga, we can see a scar indicating the wound caused by the hunter's spade. The Lord has got the name as "Kizhivanamudiar'.
