VAYALUR- SRI SUBRAMANIA SWAMI TEMPLE - PART-5
SRI. S.V.VARADHARAJAN
Murga's "vel" by itself can shower blessing on the devotees and a person who worships Lord's 'spear' can get rid of his sufferings by the Lord's grace and it is as effective as praying to the Lord Himself. Thiruppugazh sings the praise of the spear and peacock in various hymns. We find a big tree (Kallala tree) on the bank of sakthi theertham (water tank) and under that tree, there is a spear shaped idol which is called the "Idumban Kovil" and grama devathai kovil by the people. The trmple tree is 'vanni' which is very old one.
Let us see some some interesting incidents about this holy place.Saint Arunagirinathar has sung the hymns in chaste tamil in Thiruppugazh as already mentioned earlier. Just as the twelve Azhwars composed the 'Mangala Sasana' in the Vaishnavaite philosophy, and the greate four saints sang 'Thevaram' songs in the saivite philosophy. Arunagirinathar has given us the thiruppugazh ongsas his most precious service for 'Kaumara' branch of our philosophy. Vayalur is the sacred place where he got the inspiration and divine blessings for his stupendous work. The flood gates of his enormous capacity for rendering divine service were opened at Vayalur by the Vayalur Lord and the saint poet was blessed by Muruga to sing about this holy place with inspiration. It is believed that actully Lord Muruga himself proposed the starting lines 'summa iru sollara' and the saint was overwhelmed with joy on hearing this and the Lord further goaded him to sing songs in praise of the deity for the benefit of the people in the land. 'Poyya Ganapathy' guided the saint and suggested the method to sing the hymns. These wonderful facts are mentioned in the composed by Arunagirinathar.
