LORD VINAYAKA-BESTOWER OF BOONS
PART-4
SRI.S.V.VARADHARAJAN

Next we will see Pilliyar Patti which is very popular among the devotees. This temple is located on the Karaikudi-Thiruppathur road. In this temple at Pilliyarpatti, Vinayakaappears in Valampuri form with only two hands as against fourhands in other temples. It is believed that He keeps under control the entire universe with this form.He bears no weapons and is seated in Padhmasana with a sweet dish(Modhakam) in his right hand and the left hand resting on his nap. With his gracious presence, he blesses his devotees visiting the temple. Even having  a dharshan of this deity gives us a feeling in our mind that he would take care of our welfare and we need not worry for anything. He grants our wish and fulfils our needs lie a kalpaka vriksham and so he is worshipped as "Karpaga Vinayakar". Let us see the puranic story for this famous temple.

At the Himalayan slopes, a sage named Savupari was living spending his life in meditation and worship of Lord Siva. He was well versed in Vedas and Sastras. His wife Manoramai, a beautiful and chaste woman was also a great devotee of Siva. She was doing all services to her husband in performing his rituals. One day a gandharva king by name Krounchan was flying in the over that area and seeing the beautiful lady, caught hold of her hands. The lady got terribly angry. The sage who just came there saw this and ws md with anger. He cursed the king Krouchan saying that he would turn into a bandicoot digging into mud. The kingrealised his folly, begged to be excused for the folly and prostrated before the sage. The sage told that the curse given could not be changed and that as "Krochan" was a devotee of Lord Vinayaka he would get relies from the curse only with the blessings of Vinayaka.

        S.V.VARADHARAJAN
First let us see the temple at Trichy where Vinayaka is seated as Uchipilliyar atop the Rockfort in the midst of the town. How he happened to make his appearance there? Here is the puranic story for this. When Ravana breathed his last,Vibishana wanted to return to Sri Lanka.Rama gave himas his present a small idoldepicting Lord Arangan(Vishnu) in the reposing posture. When Vibishsna was carrying this divine form of vishnu with him,on his way,it was time for his doing the usual reigious rites, and he went near the Cauvery river bank there and was thinking that he should not place the sacred idol on the ground. At that time, the celestial Devas did not like the idea of the idol being taken to Sri Lanka and so they hit upon a plan and sought Vinayaka's help in the matter.Vinayaka on his part, assumed the form of a young lad and appeared before Vibishana. As expected,Vibishana approached the boy and told him to hold the idol in his hand for some time till he returned after finishinishing the rites and took it back.He wanted the boy to be careful and not to place the idol on the ground and keep holding in his hand. But the young lad, after a few miniutes, placed the idol on the ground. On seeing this,Vibishana came running to beat the boy for this. The lad took to his heels and Vibishana began chasing him.The lad saw a small rock on his way and climbed upon it and sat there.Vibishanacaught hold of theboy and hit himon the head with his knuckles. At once, the lad assumed the form of Vinayaka and seeing miracle, Vibishana prostrated before him  and offered his prayers. It is that form of Vinayaka which we see now at Trichy Rock Fort as Uchipillaiyar.

There is a puranic story as to how Vinayaka was brought into existence.Once lord Siva a
nd Uma Devi were going round the Mandapams and gardens surrounding the Kayilai Mountain. At that time, they saw in a mandapam many paintings. In one of them, the picture depicted a male and female elephant  embracing each other.Uma Devi admired
The the female elephant and Siva was attracted by the male elephant. When Siva and
Uma Devi were admiring the paintings depicting these elephants, suddenly a small figure
With an elephant face and shaped as “Pranava” and with sparkling brightness all over the
Body appeared there in the form of a child and it came around and prayed Siva and
Uma Devi.. That was Vinayaka.Gracious Vinayaka with grandeur appears in some temples with
His trunk twisted towards right side. This figure is worshipped as “Valampuri Vinayakaa” by the devotees. In all saivite temples, we can find Vinayaka in a separate shrine in the front side. There are many temples exclusively for Vinayaka in South India.Let us see three famous temples here.

         LORD VINAYAKA-BESTOWER OF BOONS

                                          BY S.V. VARADHARAJAN
Lord vinayaka is the foremost deity in the Hindu Mythology and Hagiological scriptures. On account
of this we find that the festival devoted to vinayaka - "vinayaka chathurthi" is the most important in the series
of Hindu festivals.Ussually , we find people praying to Lord Vinayaka first before initiating or commencing any work , function or project. We also recite a sloka on vinayaka at the beginning of imprtant events. The
word vinayaka connotes an an important leader with no equal. Also
,we find in vinayaka's figure, the representative aspects of many
deities. His navel(Nabi) represents Brahama, the face, that of vishnu,eyes-Sun and the Moon.Left side-Sakthi's figure and right side - Siva's figure. Thus lord vinayaka's figure  is a combination of many deities.Vinayaka is capable of performing the five main functions. He has a stylus in his hand which represents creation,
his hand holding a sweet dish(Modhakam) signifies protection, the hand which holds a hooked instrument(Ankusam) symbolises destruction, pasam(rope like instrument)denotes sheltering and
his trunk holding a small cup with nector representing his benificial
nature. Vinayaka Puranam explains the magnificence of Lord
Vinayaka in detail.Brahma first learnt this Purana from Lord Siva
and taught this to Vyasa who in turn, preached this to Brigu Muni.
It was Brigu Muni who made out this Purana into two parts as
"Upasana Kandam" and "Leela Kandam" consisting of 250 divisions and composed twelve thousand slokas.
