Our Puranas, epics and various scriptures explain the importance of the various avatars of the Almighty.By getting to know about these matters, a person develops devotion to to the Almighty, good qualities and good attitude in daily life. We never get tired of hearing or reading about these matters. In this way, let us see the grandeur of the avatar of Lord Muruga.Thinking about the grace of this deity itself is a pleasant experience.

muruga wasborn as the younger son of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi. The purpose of this avatar in the Universe was to vanquish all evil forces, and asuras and to protect the good souls like Devas. Muruga,is the younger brother of Vinayaka and he was brought up by the Karthigai ladies. The spear in his hand represents Gnana Sakthi and he married Valli(Ichcha Sakthi) and Deivanai(Kriya Sakthi). He has peacock as his Vahana(Vehicle), and 'Cock' in his Flag and blesses devotees with his six charming faces.

Like his father, Muruga is fond of abishekam, like his uncle(Vishnu) is fond of decoration.Abishekam is performed with milk, curd, panneer, coconut water, panchamirtham, vibuthi etc. This deity is decorated in the temple in various forms and figures like young child, young lad, charming youth, warrior, erudite scholar, hunter, aged man, hermit and monarch and appears seated on his peacock vahana bearing in his hands spear and 'cock' flag with his consorts Valli and Deivanai and his six charming faces are decorated in grand manner.

VAYALUR-6

VAYALUR- SRI SUBRAMANIA SWAMI TEMPLE - PART-6
SRI. S.V.VARADHARAJAN

In the song starting with "pakkarai vichitramani" the saint mentions these facts in detailin a few lines viz. "seipathiyum vaithuyar...maravene".When "Poyya Gnapathy"induced the saint to sing about Lord Muruga, bedeccked with spear (vadivel) ,Peacock Vahana, Kadappa flower garland, merciful feet and majestic shoulders, and lso about Vayalur, the saint came to the sannadhi of Vayalur Muruga and started singing. It is said that lord Muruga Himself inscribed with his "Gnanavel"(spear) on the tongue of Arunagiri the "Pranava" and bade him to start singing with the Lord "Muthai" containing three letters.Accordingly, the poet sang the song "Muthaithiru....".Thousands of songs came forth from the saint's heart like a stream. Vayalur is the sacred place which gave to the people the nector - like hymns in tamil, the 'Thirupugazh'.We know how Arungirinathar fell down from the top of the Gopuram at Tiruvannamalai temple for ending his life and at that moment, Lord Muruga himself with his benovelent hands caught hold of the saint's falling body and aved his life. Arunagiri, with that sacred body came to Vayalur and gave to the future generation the valuable songs. People will remember the saint and his greatness as long as they sing Tirupugazh and Vayalur will retain its glory for ever.

As regards the relegious rites and festivals in this temple, daily pooja is performed six times which are called as Thiru Anandhal,Kalasandhi Uchikhalam, Sayaratchai,Irandamkalam and Ardha jaamam.Muruga, like his father, is fond of Abishekam: like his uncle(Vishnu) fond of decorations. On Shashti and Karthigai days, special abishekams and decorations are performed with aradhanas and the deity is taken in procession on the streets.
