   Next to this,we come to the main sannadhi of Sri Subramania Swamy, with a graceful countenance, he showers blessings on his devotees.He has the spear in in his hand and is seated with Deivakunjari Valli. He impresses his devotees as the eternal protector of the universe. His sannadhi located just behind that of 'Adhi Nathar' sannadhi which suggests that he has taken his seat after paying respects to his Father. Usually, we find Muruga assuming the form of Balasubramania, Dhandayudhapani, Arumuga, Velayudha carrying spear in his hand, as a Lord with bow in his hand and as a Ruler with Valli and Deivayanai. At Vayalur temple, Lord Muruga appears with Deivakunjari on his right side and on this side we find the peacock face also. It is rare to see lord in such settings. Vayalur Muruga is a great benefactor for Tamil poets. Devotees offer their prayers to Vayalur Vadivela for bestowing the benifit of 'mukti' to them.


   It is believed that Lord Muruga dug up a pool of water wit his spear (Sakthi theertha) and with this water he performed pooja to his, father and mother which was witnessed by the Devas and other celestials. Muruga thereby got the form of as a 
great benefactor with their blessings. We see at Vayalur, Muruga doing pooja along with his consorts whereas in some places he does it all alone. This teaches a lesson to the devotees that married persons should do all the relegious rites with their consorts.This place is treated as the 'seventh house' (padai) i.e. the seventh important temple in the series for Lord Muruga. After prayers to Muruga, we find Mahalakshmi Sannadhi on the north side in a corner. Next, we pray to Chandikeswara and come out of the temple.

  The orginal name for the deity here is Adhivayalur Adhinathar. The Goddess is known as 'Adhi Nayaki' and 'Munnilai Nayaki'. Devotees who enter this temple, first worship Adhinathar and Adhi Nayaki and then only they they proceed to Muruga's sanctum sanctorum. The Adhi Nayaki Sannadhi is facing the south which is a speciality in this temple.It looks as if the goddess is awaiting the presence of her sons Ganapathi and Muruga and signifies her motherly affection towards her sons. Devotees thereafter go to the Sannadhi of Lord Muruga. This brings to our mind the proverb "Mother and father are the foremost deity". 


   Arunagirinathar is the Saint-poet who composed Tiruppugazh and it is believed that Lord Ganapathi who is seated in this temple bearing the name 'Poyya Ganapathi' was the sorce from which the poet got his power to compose the hymns in tis script. The Lord with his divine grace makes the devotees understand the uncertainity of human life on this earth and to realize the value of spiritual path. This philosophy is reflected in the of poet Arunagirinathar and he has done this by way of paying his obeisance to Poyya Ganapathy. We can see Arunagirinathar's sannadhi near Poyya Ganapathy's sanctum. Nearby, we can have darshan of Sri Dakshinamoorthy sitting magnificently under the 'kallala' tree as the divine preceptor for the whole universe. Next we come to Muthukumara Sannadhi and the Lord makes his appearance beautifully seated on a peacock. This deity's figure is also on the pillar near the Goddess Sannadhi and daily poojas are performed here.

 Now, let us see te puranic background of this temple.The siva Linga in this temple is 'swayambu' bearing the name 'Vidangar'. In olden days, Chola kingdom had uraiyur as its

capital and was very famous.The king had the duty of redressing the grivances his people.The king once came to the place which is currently called Vayalur for hunting animalas. While hunting, he became thirsty and finding no water anywhere, he came across a sugar cane plant sprouting into three branches. He thought 

of appeasing his thirst and so began cutting the sugarcane branch and surprisingly found blood oozing out from inside that plant. He got terrified and ordered his attendants to examine the bottom portion of that plant. To the great surprise of all of them, they found a 'siva linga' underneath that plant. The king prayed to the Supreme God saying "Oh Lord,you have shown me the blood only to show us your prescence in ths place". He immediatly decided to construct a temple for the God at that place but the king died shortly after that and so could not fulfil his desire. That place was maitaining its serenity from that time onwards and it is believed 'Adhinathar' has been taking care of that region since since then. In this temple, 'Adhinathar has been sanctified in the form of 'Agni'(fire).The Lord being the supreme power is woorshipped as Agneeswara,Mahadeva(Supreme among Devas) and also as Marappilinathar (who never forgets his devotees, and protects them)

 lord kumara is usually seated in temples atop small
mountains. At Vayalur, however we find the Lord making his
divine presence in slightly different surroundings. The temple 
at Vayalur is locted in the midst of fertile fields and mango 
groves and plantain trees in serene and calm surroundingsApart 
from the traditional six main temples(Arupadai) of Muruga, 
there are quite a few temples which are very important and 
rich in cultural background. Vayalur is one of such temples. 
The name itself indicates that it is in the midst of agricultural 
fields(Vayal). It gladdens our heart even to look at the temple 
from a distance. This temple finds a mention in the hymns of 
Thiruppugazh with the names like Vayalpathi, vayali, Vayal 
Nagar, Seippathi, Melai,Vayalai etc. In this temple we have Sannadhis for both Lord Siva and Muruga and this adds to its 
greatness. LordMuruga at this temple is worshipped in a variety   
of names like Vayaluran,Kumaraswamy, and Kumaran. We see 
here the figure of saint Arunagirinaathar who composed the 
famous Thiuppugazh on Lord Muruga. This place is also known 
as Adhikumara vayalur,and Agneeswaram. The Lord of 
mountains is graciously seated along with his consorts, Valli 
and Deivyanai and holding the 'Sakthi' spear and flag with 
cock emblem. Vayalur is a tiny and beautiful village about 12 
k.m. from Trichy.We can reach this place by Bus from the 
Choultry Bus stop in Trichy. There is a small canal on the way 
called uyyakondan canal which has many turnings due to which 
it is called 'Sarpandhi' meaning serpant like river.
